No Christmas truce for the Saharawi rights defenders

Glaimim
On Tuesday, December 25, around 12:30 pm, the Saharawi rights defender Jamal KRAIDACH was injured in the neck in a Moroccan police intervention against demonstrators with disabilities in Glaimim city, south of Morocco.
Jamal KRAIDACH, a 34-year-old Western Saharawi, was filming the demonstration of this group of persons with disabilities, who demanded to be treated with respect and their rights to a dignified life in society, when a group of policemen led by the chief officer intervened against him in order to beat him and to confiscate his camera.
The demonstration was cruelly broken up, in violation of human rights and freedom of expression and without any regard for the physical fragility of the demonstrators.

Occupied El Aaiún
On Tuesday, December 25 at 9:00 pm, the Moroccan occupation forces kidnapped the young activist Mohamed BABER, aged 20, after a demonstration organized by Saharans at El Aaouda neighbourhood in El Aaiún. The demonstrators claimed the right to self-determination of the Saharawi people. Mohamed Baber is a young man best known for his great courage.
The at least eight-man patrol that arrested him has taken the young Mohamed to the police prefecture, at the Soug Jaj district, where he is being held for 15h without being possible to have more information about him at the time of writing this press release.

Abducted for 7 years by Morocco
7 years after the abduction of their children, the mothers of the 15 young Saharawi who disappeared on December 25, 2005, still demand that their fate be disclosed.
Yesterday afternoon in their every day meeting for the past 7 years after the abduction, the families reiterated that, according to a credible source whose name they do not reveal for security reasons, the group of disappeared persons was abducted a short time after boarding by the royal police and the royal navy and it was subsequently taken in an unknown direction for questioning.
The families have lodged complaints with the Attorney General of the king at the Court of Appeal of occupied El Aaiún on February 22, 2006, and have so far received no reply.
They call on the Moroccan authorities to reveal the truth on the disappearances of their children and to release them immediately and unconditionally.

Dead during crossing
This sad anniversary occurs when it was announced, on December 17, 2012, that some young Saharawi who set out from Sidi Ifni disappeared on the high seas off the coasts of the Canary Islands whereto they were trying to escape, after their boat was struck by the Spanish police in the middle of the night. The definitive death toll is not known yet.
Many young Saharawi from the occupied territories or from the Southern area of Morocco, and also young Moroccans try to escape -often at the cost of their own lives-  the catastrophic economic situation imposed by the kingdom in the occupied territories and in their own land, as well as the totalitarian repression system that prevails there.
